Developer works are due to begin on Hospital Approach from Monday 21 July 2025 in Broomfield, Chelmsford. These are expected to take approximately six weeks complete.
The works are designed to support the Windermere development and enhance safety and accessibility in the area by:
- Constructing of a new bellmouth access on the northern side of Hospital Approach
- Upgrading footways along the site frontage to enhance pedestrian access
- Installing of a new uncontrolled pedestrian crossing with a central island on Hospital Approach
- Adding a new traffic island to improve road safety
- Relocation of the westbound bus stop on the southern side of Hospital Approach approximately 15 metres west
Traffic restrictions will be necessary throughout these work, including:
Hospital Approach:
From 21 July until the works are complete, part of Hospital Approach will be One-Way (westbound direction). Traffic can access the hospital as normal via Hospital Approach from Main Road roundabout towards Court Road/Hospital.
Vehicles exiting Hospital Approach will be diverted via Court Road as there will be a closure of Hospital Approach from Searle Crescent junction (east of Court Road) to the Main Road roundabout (eastbound direction only).
Court Road:
From 21 July 2025 until the works are complete, Court Road will be one-way, with traffic travelling southbound and then eastbound (from Hospital Approach towards B1008 Main Road). A Clearway Order will prevent on-street parking along the full length of Court Road to ensure unobstructed traffic flow.
Overnight works on Main Road:
During the work programme, a limited number of overnight road closures will become necessary on a section of Main Road to support utility works planned to support the developers. This will affect the north side of the Main Road/Hospital Approach Roundabout. Dates will be confirmed in due course.
Please note that the programme may be subject to change if affected by poor weather or if unexpected issues arise. The developer has sent letters to residents, a copy of which can be found on the webpage.
We urge drivers to take observe all signs in place and drive with care when travelling in the area as traffic restrictions will be adjusted according to working requirements.
Bus operators have been informed of the works and will follow the One-Way system that will be in force. The westbound bus stop on the southern side of Hospital Approach (approx. 50m west of “Ayletts”) will be temporarily suspended during the works.
